Master Darrel is introduced as a businessman.
(Art done by Ally)
He does what he does to make a living, and that's that. He's got scars given to him from when a few of his "items" tried to escape, however, most of them are not visible care for 2 across his face he claims are battle wounds from the war. They aren't. There are rumors that the wounds are self-inflicted. Many soldiers did this to themselves to help make the Anasiens look worse during the battle. "Filthy monsters, look what they did to me!" It was a way to try and counter the questions of "If this is a war, how the come casualties are all one sided?" There are rumors that he got the scars growing up on a ranch and nothing more, but there are also the rumors that Hunter gave him those scars... only a few people know the truth
He can come across as fairly harmless. Just some guy, not noble but not poor, who knows how to behave in the wealthy society and peddles his ware in Degac, but be careful, when you truly get to know him his dark side comes out.
His full name is J. Darrel, he goes by his last name only as a sort of status symbol and yet one more way to fool people. J could stand for anything. To those looking for a buddy, it's a simpler name, those wanting sophistication imagine it must he Jacob or James, which are two very intellectual driven names in the PTP universe, as evident by James (Never Jamey or any other abbreviation) Confection. What does the J stand for in Darrel's name? He won't say. "Oh, just something my folks called me" is his reply. He likes secrets, and doesn't like those who figure out the truth.
Master Darrel is a wicked man who chose to make his living off the lives of others. He is a sociopath and cannot lose. He must have control, and he'll play whatever game it takes to get his way.
He can act smart, or stupid, kind one second and deadly the next. He's known amongst the servants to be "as two-faced as any coin" and most of the nobles have no idea. You can compliment him and have him blush; ring his hands "aww, shucks!"ing it up until you leave, then, the moment you cannot hear him, he'll remark about how idiotic you are and how he has you so fooled.
Master Darrel grew up a middle-class ranch hand, youngest of three children, all boys. His mother had, at one time, been very wealthy but lost it all when she was forced to marry Darrel's father (no one else wanted her, she was vile), and eventually died of her own hypochondria and fear of doctors and magick.
The woman barely left the house, if ever, she did no physical labor at all (no fresh air and no exorcise... 2 things that mostly kept people alive and healthy in the Victorian age), and refused to eat anything grown on the far, or made from the animals at the ranch. It had to come from "better people" and if they could not afford it, she didn't eat. . She disliked Anasiens her whole life (some people are just racist...or... specist, I guess) and disliked the medicines and herbs as well as other treatment procedures that working with animals had somehow produced (like how we test on animals now, how we used to watch animals to see what herbs they would eat, etc.), She preferred "traditional" methods, which included phlebotomy (bleeding) where "professionals" would use a knife of a scarificator (small box with small, sharp blades that could have their length adjusted) to cut through her skin, and then a cup would be placed over the wound and heated, creating a vacuum to draw the blood out. Her frequent use of this method to anything, be is a bad feeling, a cut that might get infected (even though in her opinion, if the cut was made by a "professional" then the infection it got, if it did, was a good thing, and only bad if the cut was accidental), if she sneezed, if she got a flu... if she felt dizzy, and tired, and grew pale... eventually the blood loss of and lack of activity killed her.
His father was a hard working ranch owner who taught his kids how to make that same living caring for animals and training them for others, but Darrel always saw it as a useless career and would only use his father's teachings when he was trying to impress someone, and it usually worked.
Beyond that, his business was always fairly shady... he was the "go to guy" for anything the authorities didn't want you to have or know about, or that belonged to someone else.
His brothers as well as his father "disappeared" during the war against the Anasiens... There is a theory amongst the Servants he's "tamed" that he killed them, and that "theory" has a lot of stable ground backing it.
Once the war happened, Darrel was a prominent soldier in it. What better way to avoid being caught for all your wrong-doings if you're the one making the rules? His talent for deception and his willing to cut throats lead him to the top where he decided there were better ways to make a living than shady dealings...
With the war, slavery was back, and it fit him perfectly to be a "tamer", what with his desire to be in charge and eagerness to have people fear him. This way, he could punish anyone he chose and it was once again in a person’s best interest to befriend him, because if you made him mad... you might become one of his "items" or you may end up with one he's trained to kill you. He may also use some of the forbidden magick to harm you as well.
Master Darrel doesn't like to wear "nice" clothes, because he primarily wants to fit in with the lower class business men, but he will wear anything if it is required. So long as his wardrobe matches the occasion, he'll wear almost anything from jeans and a shirt (even if it's a bit torn), to a full tuxedo (he probably rented, stole, and/or had one of his "items" alter for him). He has a lot of clothes in various sizes, and doesn't really care of the "servants" he has for sale have better clothes than he does so long as they understand that they have those clothes because of something he did (even if that's not true at all).
The nobles see him as a "simple man" so they do not think he would ever be smart enough to deceive them, and that he'd do almost anything for a sale so he can survive, the same as the grocery store clerk or a waiter. The truth is... the moment you enter his shop, he knows you'll leave with something and it's not always something of your choosing, as you may believe, but his.
He sells Hunter to Samuel and Victoria for their daughter, because he's had Hunter far too long and realizes it looks bad to appear unable to sell an item, especially an Exotic which should bring a higher price. He knows that having the item will impress them; he knows Hunter does behave so long as he is not near the other Servants, and he knows the Lilith family has regal connections, and if he impresses them, even if it is for a short while, he will impress the King and Queen.
He also has strong connections with Hunter... he was there when Hunter was found, and he was given the boy that so many others wanted. His efforts kept Hunter alive long enough to be sold and he feels that he is responsible for the outcome of this "creature", even if that outcome is bad.
If Hunter misbehaves, Darrel sees it as a direct insult. Many who have purchased Hunter from Darrel (and there have been many, but Hunter rarely stays with them long) have regarded him as being a father-figure to the hybrid.
"He seemed so much more knowledgeable about the temperament of this one; he spoke to him more like a person."
And it's true... to a point. Darrel sees Hunter as his even after being sold. Not because of parental affection, but because he always wants what others want, and having that object reflects him well.
He sells Hunter with the hope that this sale will be the last, every time, but he is also right there when trouble occurs, going "let me take him back, I'll fix him."
Hidden deep away from prying eyes, is the reality that he sees Hunter as a nemesis. This boy has been around him long enough to know who he really is, and Darrel works hard to make sure Hunter would never dare tell anyone, but it is always a constant fear in the very back of his mind. He's never been responsible for a life for so long before, never "raised" anyone for long and he almost sees Hunter the way someone might see their own child, except he's mentally unable to feel affection. It's an annoyance and a confusion that causes him to hate the boy more than the others. He cannot kill it; it's a loss of money. It knows his secrets, his flaws, and no matter how hard he tries, he can't beat it into being a mindless zombie who knows only to serve, so Hunter is just... confusing to him.
Darrel has no real love in him. He cares for himself only, and that is all he even can do. His brain is wired not to care about anyone else. He'll play the part, he'll say the lines, but at the end of the show you are nothing to him but a toy.
