this is pretty evil too. it's somewhat scary, but people seem to think that society should embrace its prejudices. segregation is coming back through confused, empty phrases like "free association" or "property rights."
you can watch people discussing this crap on youtube. i've confronted these people occasionally and tried to give them a piece of my mind, because they don't even see their own rhetoric. most of these people profess to be libertarians, and the title just confounds me because their only preserving the business owners' right to discriminate.
but like i said i got into an argument. apparently free association works like this:
person A wants to sell some widget or service.
person B asks to buy the widget or service.
A doesn't want to sell anything to B, and the reason doesn't matter.
that sort of outlook is not okay for the business world. just to drive home the stupidity of this idea, that's like me going to the corner store for milk and being thrown out on my [expletive], even though there was milk for sale, just because i'm disabled. or because i'm short. or because you're ethnicity Y.
it's that simple to these people. it doesn't matter if people were turned away because they ran out of widgets or whatever, simply because someone owns something they have the right to discriminate and make absolutely anyone unable to buy what they need. read the comments on some of these videos. people are supporting this junk and it's freaking disgusting.
if you need more examples of this on youtube you can find them if you look.
i'm just amazed how quickly people forget the purpose of laws like the civil rights act of 1964 and how some people think our prejudices can't become social norms ever again. apparently, the way to get rid of prejudice is just to wait until you smoke every racist out and "educate" their hatred away. people must not be taking the time to sit and think about what they see/read anymore and it just makes me so mad.
unfortunately, i think it's the best tool we have if anyone else wants to help foster an appreciation of legal equality into these people. it's just so hard, and i'm glad i can talk about it on here.
i don't have a camera, so i need your help! if you're on youtube and you have anything like an audience please look into this horrible idea and make some videos about how horrible it is. if people need to be reminded that their rights come with responsibility then so be it.
